JavaScript and SEO

A new front end can improve the user experience of a store, but it’s important to evaluate how it presents content, URLs, and navigation. Simply using JavaScript doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an SEO issue or that it automatically provides an advantage. What matters is how a specific solution behaves. This guide helps you prepare requirements and tests before launch so that your technology choice supports the accessibility of your offering rather than shifting the risk to the post-launch remediation phase.

Determine the scope of the renovation and assign responsibilities

Document what is changing for the user and the system: templates, URLs, loading methods, support for variants, or the entire platform. If the project also involves URL migration, it requires a separate mapping plan. Don’t treat all changes as a single visual task.

Assign people to be responsible for features, product data, analytics, and SEO. Each person should know which issues they’re responsible for checking and what’s preventing a launch. The lack of a single decision-maker often leads to a release despite unresolved issues, because everyone assumes that someone else has already handled that area.

Before choosing a solution, define the requirements that must be met. The technology should fulfill these requirements, not replace the discussion of them. The customer needs an accessible offering, a proper ordering process, and clear navigation. The search engine must be able to read the relevant content. These are specific tasks that can be tested regardless of the name of the framework used by the developer.

Check the content before and after rendering

Compare the initial response with the content that appears after the scripts have run. Identify where the names, parameters, descriptions, and links are located. Do not judge accessibility solely on the basis that the page displays correctly in a single browser.

Google's JavaScript documentation describes the stages of page processing and the importance of accessing the necessary resources. A specific interpretation should take into account how the application works, rather than the general assumption that the bot will perform every possible interaction.

Select a few templates and different data states. A product with complete specifications, an empty category, and no variants may be handled by different components. If important information appears only after a user action, describe the need to make it available and review the solution with the developer. It is not enough to verify the content on a demo page, which contains manually prepared data and omits the most complex cases in the catalog.

The address should link to the correct page

Test direct access to the product, category, and the rest of the list. Copy the URL, open it in a separate session, and refresh the page. The user should see the expected content, not the app’s default screen that requires them to go through the entire path again.

Check the changes to the variant and filters. If the URL specifies a particular selection, the team should explain how it is reproduced. Links from campaigns, emails, and external websites are particularly important. The recipient does not need to visit the store’s homepage first.

Take non-existent addresses into account. The application should not simulate a valid result when a product or page does not exist. Expected responses and messages must be defined before publication. This ensures that the user experience is not limited to seamless transitions between screens during a developer’s session, but also accounts for how customers and bots actually interact with the site.

Links and navigation require their own test

Check how the links to categories, products, and subsequent items in the list are structured. An element that looks like a link does not always function the same way. The developer should verify that the URLs can be located and that the links behave correctly during normal navigation.

Test opening a new tab, going back, and using the keyboard. These actions show whether the design retains the basic characteristics of a user-friendly website. Modern animations should not make it difficult to compare products or return to a previous page.

Add products located deep within the catalog to the shopping cart. If the navigation only works for the first section, part of the offering may be overlooked. Don’t assume that a sitemap fixes every weakness in the site’s architecture. Customers need a logical path through the site, and search engines look for signals based on actual page relationships—not just a list of all URLs provided through a separate channel.

Model example: a shallow list with no deep nodes

The new store switches between categories smoothly in the app, but opening a copied product URL results in a blank screen. The team initially evaluates the project based on the smoothness of the transitions and doesn't notice the problem. It isn't until a test is run from a separate session that the issue is revealed.

The fix includes support for direct URLs and data retrieval. The tester then checks the category, product, variant, and a non-existent URL. It evaluates content and technical signals separately. It does not consider the fix complete after a single example opens correctly.

This is a model of a situation, not a client’s actual result. It illustrates why tests should reflect the ways users arrive via search engines and campaigns. Users do not simply view a presentation prepared by the developer. They land on various pages of the website and expect it to function properly without knowing the steps that came before. The project must be evaluated from this perspective before a decision is made to launch it.

Prepare for error checking and measurement

Test the system's behavior in the event of missing data, a delayed response, or an external service error. The customer should receive clear information and be able to proceed. A blank screen hinders both the shopping experience and troubleshooting after launch.

Get analytics based on actual sessions. In an app, changing the view doesn’t always mean the page is fully reloaded, so the measurement method requires verification. Don’t assume that previous tags will automatically track the new path the same way they tracked the old one.

Document the scenarios and expected events. The person responsible for the data should confirm that they see the correct product, stage, and result of the action. This ensures that, after launch, the team won’t mistake a lack of measurement for a drop in sales. The review should also include checking for duplicate information, as an excess of events can create an apparent increase that does not reflect customer behavior.

Before starting, ask the tester to use the list of addresses without opening the app first. Have them check the product, category, and variant in a new session and after refreshing the page. This test helps identify dependencies on previous clicks that a developer might not notice during their daily work. Save the results as a fixed regression scenario to run after subsequent component changes.

How to Initiate and Monitor a Change

Before you begin, establish a list of blocking issues, identify the decision-maker, and determine how to roll back the implementation. If the project changes multiple elements at once, make sure to establish a particularly thorough baseline. Keep examples of URLs and test results from the old version.

After publication, check the most important paths and representative direct entry points. Monitor errors, offer availability, and analytics data. Don’t wait for a traffic report to respond to a product or shopping cart that isn’t working. A functional error requires a quick diagnosis.

Formulate SEO conclusions based on groups of pages and the time it takes to process changes. Don’t attribute every difference solely to the technology itself. The content, URLs, and offerings may have changed. A well-maintained implementation log allows you to determine what was actually improved and which hypotheses still need to be tested after launching the new version of the website.

How to Maintain Requirements While Continuing to Grow

Enable the set of checks to validate changes to templates and components. A new filter, gallery, or variant switch may affect the availability of content and URLs. You don't need to repeat the full migration with every change, but you do need consistent, representative test cases.

Document your decisions and constraints. The next developer should understand why a specific section must be accessible without additional interaction and how a particular URL is rendered. Without this, a feature that works well could be accidentally simplified in a way that is harmful to the website.

Before starting a new project, work with the SEO, product, and analytics teams to define the requirements. This will allow you to evaluate the solution based on the store’s actual performance, rather than on the promise that a particular technology alone guarantees speed and visibility.

A practical acceptance test sheet can include the address, access method, expected content, navigation behavior, and the result of the test purchase. Include the date and the version of the implementation. This makes it easier to detect regressions and determine whether a problem is new or was previously accepted as a limitation. Such documentation also facilitates more efficient collaboration on fixes, as the developer receives a reproducible scenario rather than just a general note that the page is behaving strangely.

Tagi na blogu firmowym Tagi łatwo dodawać podczas publikacji, lecz trudniej utrzymać ich sens po kilkudziesięciu artykułach.
