SEO Content Update
Select articles that address a specific problem
Start by compiling a list of existing posts, rather than a list of new phrases. For each one, note the topic, business objective, key search queries, landing pages, and the date of the last substantive update. Include information on whether the article links to a current offer and whether its audience aligns with the company’s customer base.
Three Signs It's Time for a Checkup
- This material contains outdated instructions, prices, or examples.
- It still shows up in search results for important questions, but it doesn't provide complete answers to them.
- It attracts an audience, but it doesn't help them take a meaningful next step.
Priority is given to content for which you can identify the issue and describe how to fix it. The age of a publication alone does not indicate that it is of poor quality. A well-written guide on a stable topic may only require a review of its references. On the other hand, a recent piece of content with incorrect instructions requires prompt correction.
Determine why the results have changed
Compare search queries and pages in Search Console over similar time periods. Separate seasonal topics from year-round ones. If impressions are declining while rankings remain similar, the cause may be weaker demand. If the change affects many different parts of the site at once, also check indexing, site availability, and recent updates.
Consider the recipient's intent
Identify the main questions addressed in the article and analyze the types of pages that currently answer them: how-to guides, categories, tools, or comparisons. This is a qualitative guideline, not an encouragement to copy your competitors’ layout. The article may be reliable, but it may be trying to accomplish a different goal than the one the reader has in mind.
Before editing, check to see if the website already has several articles that answer nearly the same question. A new paragraph won’t resolve the conflict between their roles. Decide which text should serve as the main guide and which should expand on a specific topic. Only then should you outline the changes.
Prepare a brief for a content update
The brief should specify what the reader is expected to understand and do after reading it. List any missing answers, claims that need to be verified, outdated sections, and examples that need to be replaced. Identify the person responsible for verifying specialized information. Don’t start by imposing a word count.
Add a value that can be specified
A practical improvement could be a list of documents needed before the audit, an example of how to interpret a report, or a table of criteria for selecting a solution. Label model examples as such. Do not add client results based on general industry knowledge; they must be documented and you must have the appropriate permission to use them.
In its guidelines on useful content, Google encourages creating content for your audience. Simply changing the date without making a substantive revision does not make an article more useful. Before publishing, ask yourself: Which decision will the reader find easier to make now, and thanks to which specific part of the article?
Maintain consistency in addresses, structure, and links
If the topic and purpose of the post remain the same, do not change the URL simply because you are editing the content. Keeping the URL the same makes it easier to maintain existing links and compare data. When a URL change is necessary, set up a redirect and update internal links. Also, check the links leading to specific sections.
Editorial and Technical Review
- The title and SEO description should reflect the actual content.
- Headings should organize the questions, not repeat the same phrase in every sentence.
- The link to the offer should be context-based, such as a link to a website optimization service when the text explains the decision to use SEO support.
- The table of contents must link to the correct sections even after their order has been changed.
In templates based on ACF fields, the full content may extend beyond the main editor. Be sure to preview the entire article. Just because the introduction appears correctly in a standard WordPress field does not mean that all sections have been saved.
Measure the results and decide on your next step
Before the update, save a baseline and a list of changes. After implementation, check the site’s availability and verify that the updated content displays correctly. Then monitor the data for specific search queries and URLs. Adjust the evaluation timeline based on the frequency of bot visits, seasonality, and sample size; do not assume a guaranteed result after a specific number of days.
Movement is one of the stages of the assessment
If the purpose of the content is to drive sales, also take a look at the conversion rates to your offer and the quality of the inquiries. More clicks on a tangential topic may be less valuable than a few leads from the right audience. Keep in mind the limitations of measurement and changes in other channels.
Not every piece of content needs to be expanded. Sometimes it’s better to leave it as is, narrow down the topic, or merge it with another post after evaluating both sides. A well-managed content update is a repeatable process: diagnosis, briefing, editing, review, and evaluation. This approach helps allocate the budget toward content that supports a long-term SEO strategy.
